A third project that doubles storage capacity
The latest expansion of ASTRA Cargo & Logistics in Sindos, Thessaloniki, has been successfully completed.
We delivered 700 m² of additional freezer storage space, doubling ASTRA’s storage capacity and providing the infrastructure needed to support the next stage of its operations.
This is the third project ASTRA Cargo has entrusted to Frigo Stahl. That continuity proved valuable from the outset. Because we already understood the facility, its operational flow and the way the company works, we were able to design the extension around real day-to-day needs rather than treat it as a separate addition to the existing building.
The goal was clear: make the best possible use of the available space, create the required extra capacity and complete the work with minimal disruption to ongoing operations.
Keeping the warehouse operational throughout construction
One of the main challenges was that the existing warehouse had to remain fully operational while the extension was being built.
Construction phases, access points and scheduling were therefore carefully coordinated with ASTRA’s team. This allowed the work to progress without materially affecting the warehouse’s daily activity.

For logistics operations, this is critical. A new facility must be delivered to specification, but the business also needs to continue serving its customers throughout the construction period.
By assigning the project to Frigo Stahl on a Turn-Key basis, ASTRA had one partner responsible for design, construction and overall coordination. This allowed its own team to remain focused on the core business while we managed the project as a whole.
Dimitrios Tsaousidis, CEO of ASTRA Cargo & Logistics, said:
“This is the third project we have entrusted to Frigo Stahl. They now know our facilities and the way we operate very well, and that is important to us. Throughout the extension works, the warehouse remained operational and our team was able to stay focused on its work, knowing that the overall coordination of the project was handled by one partner.”
More capacity with improved energy performance
Energy efficiency was another important consideration in the design of the new space.
In freezer facilities, energy is a major and constant operating cost. This is why thermal insulation is not simply a construction requirement; it has a direct impact on how much energy is needed to maintain the required temperatures every day.
For the new extension, we used thermal insulation specifications above the minimum required standard. This helps limit thermal losses and reduces the cooling load on the refrigeration system.
For ASTRA, the benefit is twofold: improved energy performance and lower energy requirements over the life of the facility.
As Panagiotis Firtinidis, Project Manager at Frigo Stahl, explains:
“From the beginning, we focused on two things: maximising storage capacity within the available space and completing the work without disrupting ASTRA’s operations. We also paid particular attention to the thermal performance of the new freezer area, because in a facility like this, decisions made during design and construction can affect energy consumption for many years”.
With the project now completed, ASTRA has doubled its storage capacity and gained a new facility designed to support both its current needs and future growth.
For us, the fact that this is the third project we have completed together is equally significant. Repeat assignments are a clear indication that a working relationship delivers value in practice.
